Welcome from the Mayor
Aarhus is one of Denmark’s fastest-growing cities and one of the leading growth centres with more than 310.000 citizens.
The City of Aarhus plays a important and dynamic role in urban, business and educational development. And the municipality is committed to ensuring safety, rights and support for good living conditions for each individual citizen while at the same time focusing on strengthening democratic dialogue between citizens and the municipality.
In recent years, Aarhus has achieved several milestones as an international knowledge centre: A number of international businesses have decided to establish themselves or expand their activities in Aarhus, Aarhus University ranks among the top 100 of the world’s 17,000 universities, and more and more international employees, researchers and students are coming to Aarhus. At the same time, Aarhus has launched its bid to be European City of Culture in 2017.
In addition to serving as a container traffic hub, the Port of Aarhus is also being developed into a new and fashionable urban area.
The greater Aarhus area has the world's most dense concentration of wind energy companies and represents as much as 87 % of Denmark's entire turnover from wind energy. Additionally, almost 60 % of all chief executives in the wind turbine industry and more than half of all other high-ranking employees in the industry are concentrated in the greater Aarhus wind cluster. Aarhus is now working purposefully at profiling and strengthening its position as ‘Capital of Wind Energy’.
Architectural companies and educational institutions in Aarhus are positioning themselves on the global map. Architectural firms in Aarhus account for more than half of Denmark's total export of architectural services. Aarhus also has Denmark's highest degree of specialisation in architecture and design. Three of Denmark's five largest drawing offices are located in Aarhus, and in addition to these, there is a growing number of small and medium sized architectural businesses.
In the field of design, Aarhus also holds a strong position with a group of nationally and internationally recognised design companies. The city prides itself of having everything from an exciting environment of creative freelancers to the largest integrated design house in Scandinavia.
The City Council has set up a number of major development goals for the next 20 years. The city must continue to grow – 75,000 more inhabitants, 20,000 new homes, 50,000 more jobs and 10,000 more students. And, at the same time, the city should be CO2-neutral by 2030.
To realise these goals, it is vital that we maintain and further develop the unique collaboration with visionary players from the city’s business community, educational and research environment, the cultural scene and the public authorities.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for this collaboration. I hope you enjoy the website.
